“Your Cakeshops and our Printshops”
The story of the most famous case of discrimination
in businesses and services in Israel
In 2016, while being head of the legal department of the biggest Israeli LGBTQ NGO, I received a phone call from one of its volunteers telling the story of a printshop answering her price request email, saying “We will not deal with this blasphemy! We are God fearing Jews!” Six years after, the Israeli Supreme Court had ruled in favor of the volunteer represented by Nimrod, and causing a media stir and an Orthodox legislators declaration of an intention to amend the Israeli law prohibiting from this type of discrimination, a declaration which resulted in a historical massive business sector political intervention, in which over 200 large-scale Israeli banks, Hi-Tech companies & other industries declared they will not cater client businesses which will discriminate customers in case of this type of legislation.
This lecture tells the story of this lawsuit and its massive public outcomes in Israeli society as well as asks ethical questions such as “Should a liberal state allow or object business discrimination as a rule?”, “Why do we need Anti-Discrimination legislation” and “When will we actually want to defend the right of the businessowner to discriminate?” Going out of this lecture, listeners will get a deep understanding of the full scale of damages done to discriminated customers without avoiding the damages inflicted to the businessowners forced to provide services against their conscience, as well as get an up-to-date picture of public opinions in Israeli society and Parliament.
