The LGBTQ Community in Israel
Past, Present & Future
In mid Feb of 2023, in the midst of the biggest political crisis Israel had gone through since 1948, a turmoil dividing roughly 80% of Israelis into two clear-cut resentful groups, one of the nation's most influential Journalists, a 30 years old Haredi Orthodox Jew, came out of the closet in what turned out to be the most popular tweet and FB post in Israel's history. In a rare moment of outstanding cross-national show of support in the Journalist's expressed intentions of keeping his Orthodox faith and community while being openly Gay, it might seem as the final winning moment for the Israeli LGBTQ community, fighting for national acceptance ever since its first Pride parade in 1979 Tel-Aviv, largely organized by US-born civil rights activits.
However, Israel's newly elected current government, elected by many of the consverstive voters which expressed their support of the journalist's self emancipation, is the most Homophobic government in Israel's history, and openly expressed its intentions of legalizing same-sex discrimination and even listing LGBTQ journalists and "leftist" civil servants, "promoting progressive ideas". Having said that - the Israeli LGBTQ community feels like its under an attack by a government which does not represent the sentiment of its voters.
In this talk, Nimrod frames the story of the Israeli LGBTQ community in a combination of Legal, Political and Sociological contexts, from its establishment in 1948 up to its current constitutional crisis, threatening to shift the country’s Pro-LGBTQ approach in recent decades. Presenting the audience with a series of in-depth, personal insights about being Gay, Jewish and Israeli, Nimrod shares his experience as an openly Gay former Government Official, Parliament Advisor, IDF Commander, Civil Rights lawyer and a Board member of the country biggest LGBTQ NGO.
Going out of the talk, listeners will feel acquainted with the basic Political and Identity framework of different LGBTQ communities in Israel including Secular, Orthodox & Haredi Jews, Palestinians holding Israeli ID’s or Palestinian ones, Army soldiers, Transgender people, Women, Fugitives & Jewish Immigrants (Olim), as well as different legal aspects of LGBTQ life in Israel including Parenthood, Workplace and Customer Discrimination, Healthcare, Education, Police treatment and more, while comparing it to the listeners Home-Country situation.
